Not Therapy: Students in Massachusetts Hear Sexual Recording on a Depression Hot Line

January 18, 2009 – 11:31 am

8th Graders at a school in Massachusetts were given a phone number to a Depression Hotline. However, the hotline changed their number, and what the students heard was a recording for a phone sex line.

How are parents to react to this? Is laughter good therapy? Or is this a serious oversight by the school district.

According to sources, toll free numbers are often bought in bulk, and advertisements containing “adult content” are not uncommon. Hence, an expired toll free number could easily become connected to a service that provides “adult content.”
